"I will praise the Lord all my life;
I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.”
Psalm 146:2

The promise of God to us in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation,“ is to me, one of the most joy-giving and hope-filled promises in all of scripture.

Yet sometimes in my own life, I seem to see little evidence of that new creature. Instead, the person I see in my mirror often seems to be the same old sinner who has always stared back at me, struggling at various times with selfishness, jealousy, or pride.

God’s promises are true, however. So how can we see this transformation that we are promised?

I am learning (still learning…after walking with the Lord some 40 years — how patient a teacher our Jesus is!) that one way God transforms me is through praise. Praise turns my focus from me and my failure or sin, to God and His love and power.

Psalm 146 gives us example after example of reasons to praise God—

—He made heaven and earth, the sea and everything in them
—He is powerful
—He is faithful forever
—He feeds the hungry
—He is loving.
—He executes justice for the oppressed
—He is wise
—He lifts up those who are bowed down
—He is merciful

When we see God’s character and we praise Him for who He is, we are changed. God’s love for us and His power in us makes us new.

Question: When you think about God’s character and who He is in your life, what reasons do you have to praise Him today?

Lord, I praise you for who you are and that I am made new in you. Help me to be more aware of your character and good works in the world. And as a result, transform my heart and mind. I pray your kingdom would come and your will would be done in me and through me in my everyday life—on earth as it is in heaven.  In Jesus' name, Amen.
