UPDATE ON THE SITUATION IN HONDURAS

July 3, 2009, 1:02 PM

Suzy reports that things are quiet now.  "We are planning another weekend of hunkering down here at the children's home, as there is no way of knowing what is going to happen.  I'm so thankful that I live nearby, and can get here without going through major police posts."

Please continue to pray for Honduras, LAMB, Suzy and her family, the children and staff.  With international aid threatened to be cut off, LAMB needs our support in every possible way now more than ever.  Thank you.
July 2, 2009, 10:53 PM

Many people gathered in person, on Facebook, and in spirit to pray together for Honduras, the safety of our lambs and the Honduran people.  Thanks be to God.  Lord, hear our prayers.

Notice from the US Embassy in Tegucigalpa:

To:       All American Citizens
From:     American Citizens Services Unit, Consular Section
Date:     July 2, 2009
Subject:  Warden Message - 4th Update, Continued Political
               Unrest in Honduras

Due to the current unstable political and security situation in
Honduras, the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa recommends that American
citizens defer all non-essential travel to Honduras until further
notice.

The Embassy advises American citizens residing in and visiting Honduras
to restrict travel to within city limits July 3 - 5, 2009.  The
government of Honduras has imposed a curfew effective from 2200 (10:00
p.m.
) to 0500 (5:00 a.m.) the nights of July 2 and July 3.  The Embassy
strongly recommends American citizens abide by this curfew.

Demonstrations both against and in favor of the new regime are expected
to take place over the weekend throughout the country, including in
Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, El Progreso and Roatan. Demonstrations to
date have been generally non-violent and there have been few reports of
injuries.

Honduras' land borders with Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua have
re-opened to commercial traffic; private vehicles and tourist buses are
still being allowed to cross unhindered.

Honduran airports remain open for regularly scheduled flights.
Continental Airlines, American Airlines and Delta Airlines continue to
operate flights as usual, though this is subject to change.

July 2, 2009, 2:02 PM - Eric Drew reports...

An excerpt from Eric Drew's blog.  Eric spent a year living and working at SBV.  He is planning to marry Dulce, a former SBV staff member, on August 1 and live and work in Roatan:

“…So what I do know is that it all scares me… and I know there is a lot of international tension. People have talked about stopping trade and commerce with Honduras, stopping sending money… and we all REALLY rely on outside aid and support from outside. If commerce and trade stops, we are really in trouble…I just hope and pray that even through all the political turmoil and tension, the threats and killings, through all of that, someone remembers that in Honduras we are people. We are people who are mostly poor, mostly uneducated, almost completely dependent on foreign aid, we are being blind-folded, and we are scared.”

July 1, 2009, 5:38 PM - Prayer gathering for peace

We need to come together in prayer for the situation in Honduras and for our brothers and sisters suffering there. Please come and join us on Thursday, July 2nd at 6:30 - 7:30 on Facebook for a time of prayer for Honduras. You can find us on the LAMB Institute Supporters Group page which is open to all people to join. Find us here: www.facebook.com/event.php

People in the Charleston area can gather  in person in the Loft at the Long Point Campus (Seacoast)

If you are not on Facebook or in Charleston, join the LAMB community wherever you are.  We will be praying for protection, peace, knowledge and whatever else God places on your heart for the Honduran people.

so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. 12 You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. Isaiah 55:11-12

July 1, 2009, 10:00 AM

We are monitoring events in Honduras closely and are in close contact with Suzy.  At this time, everyone is safe but worried and taking every precaution to remain safe.   We are in contact with the US citizens, Suzy, Valerie, and Wheeler, to ensure they are registered with the US Embassy.  The LAMB staff and boards, both in Honduras and in the US, have collaborated on a contingency plan in the event the political situation deteriorates significantly.

Many people who love and support LAMB have asked what they can do.  First and foremost is pray.  Please pray for a peaceful resolution to the crisis, safety for all of our LAMB brothers and sisters and for all Hondurans.  Pray that the people of Honduras will be saved from violence, discord, and confusion. Defend their liberties, and fashion them and us all into one united people under the banner of the Prince of Peace.

Please know that we continue to care for the children and staff.  The children at SBV are being fed, children are being taught, CAP is feeding the poor, the LAMB office is being run professionally and calmly and all are embraced in the love of the Risen Lord and our wonderful staff.

We will continue to update this section as we learn more.  Please check back frequently for the latest updates.

For Volunteer Teams and individuals planning trips to LAMB:

If the situation continues to deteriorate, we may not be able to receive teams.  We cannot risk their personal security by having them come down during such an uncertain time. There is currently a travel alert for Honduras.  Please monitor the US State Department International Travel Information website:

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_1766.html

Margaret Merritt, Director of Operations, will remain in close contact with those who hope to visit in the next several weeks.

Oremus (Let us pray):

Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

The Latin American Missionary and Bible Institute (LAMB) is committed to reaching out to the world with the love of Jesus.

LAMB reaches in love out to those nearby.  In Honduras where LAMB is located, LAMB provides a nursery, daycare, kindergarten and school for those children whose mothers would otherwise be forced to leave them alone while they work to provide for them.  LAMB provides community assistance for many in an area of Tegucigalpa where poverty is a way of life.  LAMB reaches out in love to the world.  Hondurans called to global mission receive training at LAMB that prepares them to take the truth of the Gospel to the world that God so loves.
